Scott Matthews, IES, IALD



Scott Matthews is one of the United States’ leading authorities on daylighting. His teaching experience, research and professional affiliations have enhanced his innovative work in this specialty area.

Prior to joining Brandston Partnership, Inc. in 1986, he was a partner in the firm of Van der Ryn, Calthorpe & Matthews, with Principal Responsibility for energy and daylighting design consulting activities.

He is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and serves on its Energy Management Committee and on the non-residential energy design standards writing committee of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (SSPC 90.1). He holds Architectural Registration in California.

He has taught daylighting design in Berkeley's Department of Architecture and in the Illuminating Engineering Society's Summer Workshops for Teachers of Lighting. He has also served as Research Consultant to the Department of Energy's Windows and Daylighting Program at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. As a result of the innovative nature of his work, Mr. Matthews was awarded a Loeb Fellowship in Advanced Environmental Studies at Harvard's Graduate School of Design.

Mr. Matthews has published articles on daylighting in professional journals and has given seminars and presented papers at the annual conventions and conferences held by several professional societies.

Mr. Matthews holds BA and Masters of Architecture degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, where his studies stressed energy and climate-related issues, with a special emphasis on design for daylighting.
